What to do for homekeeping on Mondays is easily answered in one of my favorite vintage homekeeping books, Maidcraft by Lita Price & Harriet Bonnet.  Here is what to do on Mondays. Here is the exact vintage list.
I am trying this vintage homekeeping routine for the remainder of the year, and it coordinates perfectly with the gentle reminders in my mother culture plans.

In addition, if you want to create and post a peaceful morning schedule, use:

Monday morning:

  1. Breakfast (and prepare school lunches if needed).
  2. Gather laundry, sort, and start the load for the day.
  3. Straighten living-room (see detailed list below).
  4. Straighten dining room (see list below).
  5. Wash breakfast dishes and straighten kitchen.
  6. Plan meals for the day and make market list. (You may wish to plan weekly.)
  7. Change and make beds. Be sure to put soiled sheets in laundry.
  8. Start weekly task, which may be: clean one room thoroughly.
  9. Prepare and serve luncheon.

Monday afternoon:

  1. Wash dishes, tea towels, and finish laundry load for the day.
  2. Finish weekly task.
  3. Start early preparations for dinner (if needed).
  4. Time-out for anything you want.

One hour before dinner.

  • Prepare balanced dinner: serve it; wash dishes and leave kitchen clean.

Tip!  Set a beautiful table for dinner each night and lay mail at person's placesetting.

Straighten Room Checklist (20 min.)

It always starts with opening a window to air the room . . .
This is for most rooms (living room, dining room, bedroom) . . .
  1. Straighten room, putting everything in its accustomed place, picking up all magazines and carrying out old papers.
  2. Empty and wipe out trays and waste-baskets.
  3. Fluff up pillows, straighten slip covers, and whisk off upholstered furniture.
  4. Change water in flowers and throw away wilted flowers. (Never leave stale flowers in a room.)
  5. Pull all shades to the same level.
  6. Dust furniture.
  7. Use dustless mop over floors.
  8. Use carpet sweeper or quickly vacuum, if necessary.
  9. Replace all furniture you've disarranged in cleaning.
  10. Reconnect any lamps you have disconnected for vacuuming.
