Welcome to Old Fashioned Education's FREE online K-12 curriculum -
-a family together program of study in 3 lessons per day.
Before you begin, please read the introduction and license agreement.

t Old Fashioned Education you’ll find a gentle Charlotte Mason-Inspired family together curriculum ordered around 2 cycles of history with the Bible as the foundation. Each program of study includes a booklist (what to teach), schedule (when to teach it), teacher guide (how to teach it). I also share mom time devotionals and how we homeschool on the blog. We utilize free old-fashioned living books and textbooks from the 1800-1900's, that are beautifully illustrated, not dumbed down, do not contain political propaganda, and are in the free domain.

A Liberal Education for All
Picture
Charlotte Mason believed all children should have access to a liberal education - meaning broad and plentiful. Our booklists use mostly free old-fashioned books, as we found expensive doesn't mean better. It makes a liberal arts education, not just affordable for all, but free!

Living Books
You don't need a degree to be a great teacher. Just read great books! I never heard my children complain about listening to a good story! Yet, they learn so much. If you are struggling with homeschool burnout, drop the boring textbooks and endless worksheets, and try living books - a good story by a single author. My first two children are now adults and still love great books - the classics.
Peaceful Schedule
You don't need a lot of time to teach many grades. We have a peaceful morning schedule in 3 lessons per day - that's one lesson per program per day. For prep-level, it's just one lesson. By keeping short lessons, the children enjoy a broad feast of studies.

We share our program of study here as a free service to other homeschooling parents.

How much Parental Involvement is needed?
Our program provides a peaceful morning schedule from 9:00 to 12:00. If you are using our day-by-day lesson plans, no additional prep time is required. Parents are involved and enjoy reading living books and listening to narrations with their children in Programs 1 and 2, plus guide or assign independent work in Program 3 (as determined by you and your child's growth).  Involvement is easy and enjoyable!
What teaching Method is used?
We believe method is best determined by you and according to the needs of your child. Generally, our lesson plans can be described Charlotte Mason-Inspired. We encourage the use of a Recitation Notebook for repetition which aids in memory work. We incorporate many Charlotte Mason and Old-Fashioned methods into our lesson handbooks.  You can learn about our method here.
How Do You Teach 3 Lessons per day?
First, we group several subjects into each program of study. You will not study every subject every day, but instead the subjects are spread throughout the week. Next, we made programs 1 and 2 family together with grade-level assignments. Do 3 lessons per day (1 per program) for a complete curriculum. See how it works.
How do you choose books?
Old Fashioned Education utilizes many wonderful living books and textbooks from the 1800-1900's which have the great advantage of not being dumbed down, not containing political propaganda, and are in the FREE domain. We selected many books from Miss Maggie's original source (plus lots of others through extensive research) to create a family together program of study to share as a free resource from my family to yours.

All Booklists are carefully selected to meet the following criteria:
  1. A balance of Biblical textbooks and living books.
  2. A beautiful and high-quality book in both text and illustrations.
  3. An affordable book that is priced on actual value of printing (price per page) to meet consumer need, not producer want for profit.
  4. A re-sellable book, with a limit of 10% or less in consumable books per booklist.
  5. A book that is available in two formats - printed and free online. *

*Please note!  Our teacher guides are printed commercially which is more affordable than home printing. We receive a small commission which helps to off-set costs to run this website.  A few book selections are available in only one format.
