Old Fashioned Education presents bibliography & notes for home and school educators.
[1] The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home by Susan Wise Bauer (book)
[2] A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on The Gentle Art of Learning™ by Karen Andreola (book)
[3] Build Your Own Curriculum by Sonya Shafer (article)
[4] Old-Fashioned Education by Miss Maggie (article)
[5] The Classical Teacher by Cheryl Lowe (quote in Winter 2021 magazine): "Memory is foundational to a classical education, and, as you know, is completely countercultural to progressive education. Training the memory is the first practical task of the teacher. Training teachers to focus on memorization in the classroom is really the first practical step in turning that teacher away from modern education to traditional classical education."
[6] Classical Teaching Textbook was the original name of our curriculum which uses an ADAPTED version of OFE using our book criteria. Since we have leaned more and more toward living books and a blend of methods, we considered changing the name. When Oldfashionededucation.com was no longer published online by Miss Maggie, we felt it was appropriate to change our domain to Oldfashionededucation.org: (1) to better represent our curriculum, and (2) to preserve this wonderful free resource for your family and mine.
[7] The Recitation Notebook is when notes are written in question-and-answer format. The question is on the first line and the answer is on the second line. Our Teaching Series uses this old-fashioned study tool, because with it, we find every class every day is not necessary, but students still achieve long-term memory, also called mastery.
“Let knowledge grow from more to more, But more of reverence in us dwell.” ― Alfred Tennyson
[8] The Rod & Staff's Bible Course, The Story of God's Chosen People Family Series is recommended, not required, for students in grades 7-12 as a companion guide for the King James Bible reading assignments in our Christian Study Teaching Series. It meets our criteria that (1) the Bible is used for textbook and (2) workbooks are affordable, thorough, and accurate covering vocabulary, customs, maps, chronology, and more. For the student or parent with limited Bible training, this course is most helpful.
